Best Practices Committee

SMRP’s Best Practices Committee is responsible for the identification and development of standard definitions for common Maintenance and Reliability Metrics. This includes:

• Maintaining the current metrics published
• Identifying and developing additional metrics needed in the M&R Community
• Defining and developing “Best Practice” values to be associated with the use of the metrics published

For benchmark comparisons between organizations to be valid standard definitions were and are needed. To date, the committee has:
• Defined and published 67 standard metrics
• Harmonized 29 of these metrics with European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS)
• Published SMRP Best Practice Metrics (a compendium)
• Publshed Global Maintenance & Reliability Indicators (GMARI)

Metrics and other Publications are available in the new LIBRARY OF KNOWLEDGE

All Metrics align with the 5 Pillars of Knowledge
• Pillar 1: Business and Management
• Pillar 2: Manufacturing Process Reliability
• Pillar 3: Equipment Reliability
• Pillar 4: Organization & Leadership
• Pillar 5: Work Management

Each metric is formatted in a comprehensive document that includes
• Definition
• Objective
• Who uses it
• Recommended Frequency of Measurement
• Metric Formua
• Definitions for each component in the formula
• Sample Calculation(s)
• Harmonization if applicable*
• References used to arrive at the definition

With the initial metrics defined, the Best Practices Committee is focusing on developing a “best in class” target for each metric (where appropriate). This effort will use a similar process to the one used to define the metrics and is expected to be completed by midyear 2012.

*To begin setting a global standard, the Best Practices Committee has been working with the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS) to ensure that the metric definitions are consistent (“harmonized”) with those defined in Europe. To date, 29 metrics have been through the harmonization process.
