Spouse Programs
Spouses can enjoy a great time seeing St. Louis on Tuesday and Wednesday. SMRP has two fantastic programs. Each program costs $75/person and includes breakfast, lunch, transportation, guide and access to the tours.
Spouse Program 1: Grand
Tour of St. Louis
Tuesday, October 20, 2009, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

This tour includes a downtown St. Louis narrated tour with views of Laclede’s Landing, the Mississippi Riverfront, Old Cathedral, Old Courthouse, and Market Street. Tour to stop at the Gateway Arch and St. Louis Union Station for lunch and shopping on own. Group to finish tour with a visit to the New Cathedral.
Trace the history of St. Louis beginning with the city’s original settlement, Laclede’s Landing. It is now a nine block historic district filled with renovated turn-of-the-century buildings housing shops, eateries and offices. Just east of the Landing, pass the Gateway Arch excursion riverboats. Next, visit the famous Gateway Arch, the Nation’s tallest monument, which commemorates the gateway to the west for thousands of 19th century pioneers. Take a tram ride to the top of this 630’ stainless steel architectural wonder. Those preferring not wanting to ride the tram may enjoy Monument to the Dream, the film documenting the construction of the Arch. You may also visit the free Museum of Westward Expansion located beneath the Arch, which offers exhibits on Native Americans, the early settlers in Missouri and the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails, which departed from St. Louis.
Next, pass the Old Cathedral, the oldest Cathedral west of the Mississippi. Across the street is the Old Courthouse, the setting of cases involving slavery, the fur trade and equal rights. Of these cases, the Dred Scott Freedom Trial is the most notable. Continuing west on Market Street, you will pass several of St. Louis’ civic buildings and plazas en route to historic St. Louis Union Station. Once the busiest rail terminal in the world, the Grand Hall and Train Shed have been magnificently renovated to house specialty stores and festive markets. After a brief walking tour of the Station, there will be time for lunch (on own) and shopping.
En route to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, known locally as the New Cathedral, tour through the historic Central West End, a fashionable area that reflects St. Louis’ rich architectural history. At the New Cathedral you will see one of the largest collections of mosaics in the world - 84,000 square feet in 8,000 shades of color! The tiny pieces of tessere and glass portray scenes from both Old and New Testaments, the life of Saint Louis IX, King of France and many men and women prominent in the history of St. Louis.
Spouse Program 2: A Taste of St. Louis
Tour
Wednesday, October 21, 2009, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
This itinerary includes stops at Viviano’s Grocery
and Volpi Sausage, lunch on own at Favazza’s on “The Hill,”
dessert from Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, an Anheuser-Busch Brewery Tour
and a stop at Soulard Market.
Begin your day with a visit to “The Hill,” the home of St.
Louis’ Italian community located in the southwest part of the city.
Important as an industrial and residential area since the 1800’s,
today it is home to many restaurants, both elegant and casual, ethnic
groceries and bakeries, and also entertainment including bocce alleys.
Today you will visit Viviano’s Grocery Store and have the opportunity
to purchase delicious cheeses, sausage, pastas and many other Italian
goodies. Next you will visit Volpi Sausage Company to learn the history
of Volpi Sausage and its importance to this Italian community.
Enjoy lunch on own at Favazza’s on the Hill. Delight in the culinary treats that made your mouth water all morning long. Dessert will be from Ted Drewes Frozen Custard…another St. Louis specialty. Enjoy a specialty “concrete” shake that is so thick you can turn it upside down.
To complete your day your Destination St. Louis tour guide will familiarize you with the rich history of the colorful Busch family en route to the King of Beers—the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Situated in a 100- acre complex with over 70 red brick structures, the brewery buildings are known for their unique architecture and several are National Historic Landmarks. During the tour, you will see the World Famous Clydesdales, the Fermentation Building, the Packaging and Bottling Plant, the Brew House and a film about the brewing process. Be sure to stop in the hospitality room to sample the family of Anheuser-Busch products following the tour.
Before leaving the Soulard neighborhood visit Soulard
Market, the oldest continuous farmer’s market west
of the Mississippi, where you may find produce, spices, fish, odds and
ends and even live animals! This tour also includes concrete dessert from
Ted Drewes!
