Benchmarking is a process of seeking out Best practices that can be adopted to improve performance. The SMRP Benchmarking Committee is focused on benchmarking as it relates to the Maintenance & Reliability (M&R). community.
The Benchmarking Committee is comprised of three subcommittees, which are working to provide real value-added improvement opportunities to our members.
The SMRP conducts Benchmarking Studies based on responses to benchmarking questionnaires completed by member companies. The updating of these studies is being examined by the Benchmarking Survey Subcommittee.
Benchmarking requires data on best-in-class companies or processes, and a means to assess your current state. The Benchmarking Resources Subcomittee, which is chaired by Mike Barrett, is developing a database of industry organizations that are sources for M&R benchmark data. The product of this subcommittee will be web-enabled databases that members can access to locate sources of benchmark data applicable to their industry or process, and a listing of potential partners to assist them in improving their performance.
Jerry Putt chairs the Performance Measurement Subcommittee, which is focused on developing definitions and quantatitive ratings for qualitative benchmarking survey questions. This will provide enhanced techniques for interpreting the reults of benchmarking surveys.
Taken together, the activities of these subcommitties enable the SMRP Benchmarking Committee to povide a set of tools to allow SMRP members to focus on the alignment of M&R processes, functions, and best practices with their business objectives.
The Committee Chair is Mark Adam of Nemak.
